Winter Warmers: Tips to keep cosy in colder weather

After what felt like a neverending Summer across Victoria, the mercury has finally dropped. Mercifully, we’ve also enjoyed some much-needed rain here in Lara as we fast approach the beginning of Winter. For many, this season means hibernation, extra cuddles on the couch with our furry friends and a welcome pause after the busy social months of Spring and Summer. Yet the impact of shorter days and cloudier conditions on some of us (the so called “Winter Blues”) is very real. That’s why we’re happy to share a few timeless ‘Winter Warmer’ tips, honed from many frosty nights at Elcho Park, to help your entire household stay snug as a rug no matter the weather outside! 😊

Keep your home warm & dry

Our first and most obvious tip? Keep your home warm and dry throughout Winter when the mercury can drop well below single digits overnight. A normal body temperature range for dogs is 38-39C, and 37-39C for cats. Once it falls below 36C the risk of hypothermia rises. Simple changes like using draught stoppers under doors, closing curtains at night and adding rugs and cushions to your living space can help retain extra heat. Don’t forget the state government offers the popular Victorian Energy Upgrades for Homes program, with rebates for upgrading to energy efficient devices, including solar panels and split system A/C.

Rug up – both you & your pet!

You’ve probably heard the classic expression “there’s no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing”. There’s a lot of truth in this, which brings us to our second tip – rug up with extra layers to match the conditions outside. With body heat escaping through our head, hands and feet; a cute beanie, scarves, gloves and socks (for both you and your furry friend) are highly effective ways for staying warm in Winter. Seeking  inspiration? We recommend the pet clothing ranges at Big W, Kmart, Petbarn and PetStock as a starting point.

Stay active outdoors

We get it... It’s cold and grey outside and there’s no place you’d rather be than hibernating on the couch, best friend by your side. Despite the temptation of a cosy house, we guarantee you’ll feel good after taking your pet for a short walk around the block and getting a dose of fresh air. Even more so if the sun is shining – Vitamin D in Winter can do wonders to boost our mood and energy levels. With up to 75% of dogs suffering Vitamin D deficiency, there’s even more reason to rug up and (temporarily) embrace the great outdoors!

Enjoy extra cuddle time

There’s no science behind this tip, but we’ve all experienced the benefits of cuddling up with our furry friends after a long day. So, having factored in their daily walk, embrace the coziness of the season without guilt we say, and enjoy extra couch time as you stay warm and strengthen your special bond. 😊

Maintain regular vet visits

Our final tip: Maintain your pets regular 6-month check-ups at their local vet. Winter can often aggravate seasonal ailments, especially cat flu, canine arthritis and even skin conditions. Don’t have a regular vet? We recommend visiting the RSPCA and AVA (Australian Veterinary Association) directory to find a qualified practitioner close to home. Don’t forget to watch your own health and take the time to properly rest if you catch a cold!
